Women in News Media Worldwide

The Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media, sponsored by the International Women’s Media Foundation, reveals women represent one-third of full-time journalists and that most management positions remain occupied by men in  the 522 companies who participated in this international study.

Principal Investigator Dr. Carolyn Byerly, Professor of Communications at Howard University, coordinated the 150 researchers working in 59 countries who gathered this data. The findings were presented recently in Washington, D.C., and covered by C-SPAN. The focus of the discussion is on those companies with the greatest successes in moving toward gender equity. Looking at what works to increase gender diversity in the newsroom is also a glimpse into serving the news audiences better.
